The week moved quietly but deliberately. Cities in Haryana chose their mayors. The IEA revised its oil forecast downward. Himachal turned enforcement up a notch. Assam set a legislative clock for late May.
None of it loud. All of it consequential. Let’s get into it.
Power and Policy
Haryana cities swing BJP in civic polls
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) recorded a decisive victory in the Haryana municipal corporation elections, winning mayoral posts in key urban centers including Ambala, Sonipat, and Panchkula. The party also made gains in Sampla, a region linked to former Congress chief Bhupinder Singh Hooda, signaling a shift in local political dynamics.
In Ambala, Akshita Saini retained the mayoral seat for the BJP with a margin of over 21,000 votes. While the party dominated most urban bodies, an independent candidate backed by opposition parties won in Uklana, highlighting pockets of local variation within a broader BJP sweep.
Why it matters:
Municipal polls test ground-level organization. Haryana’s results echo recent civic trends in BJP-ruled states, underlining the party’s edge in urban politics.
Money Matters
Global oil supply set to fall short of demand this year, IEA warns

Global crude output is expected to remain below total demand in 2026 as the ongoing conflict involving Iran continues to disrupt oil production across the Middle East, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said in its latest market report.
Supply losses linked to damage to infrastructure and restricted tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz have led the agency to cut its earlier surplus forecast, now projecting a shortfall of around 1.78 million barrels per day this year. Inventories have also been drawn down as markets adjust to persistent disruptions.
State of the Week - Himachal Pradesh
Himachal steps up for a tobacco-free future
The Himachal Pradesh government, through its Health Department, is intensifying efforts to curb tobacco use across all 12 districts of the state. The push includes stricter enforcement of existing tobacco-control laws and expanded public awareness campaigns, with a particular focus on schools and young people.
Officials say the objective is to prevent early addiction and reduce long-term public health costs associated with tobacco-related illnesses, as the state looks to strengthen preventive healthcare outcomes rather than rely on treatment-led interventions.
From the Edges

Indian recurve archers take gold at World Cup Stage 2
India’s women’s recurve team - Deepika Kumari, Ankita Bhakat, and Kumkum Mohod - won gold at Stage 2 of the Archery World Cup, defeating host nation Korea in the final. The trio displayed consistent shooting and composure under pressure to clinch the top podium spot, marking a standout performance on the international circuit.
When global supply can't meet demand, costs don't vanish - they relocate. When a party wins municipal elections, governance doesn't get easier - it gets tested. The gap between winning and delivering is where the next few months will be decided.
