The biggest diplomatic gathering of the year wrapped up in Delhi on Sunday. Xi Jinping came to India for the first time in seven years. Putin was there. So were leaders from 11 countries. The question was whether they could agree on anything. They did.

Nazrul Haque grew up watching his family's paddy fields in Assam's Sribhumi district disappear under monsoon water every year. One year, he asked a different question: what if the water is not the problem?

The headline moment:
Xi Jinping's meeting with Modi was his first India visit in seven years. Both sides committed to resolving the border dispute, improving trade and connectivity, and strengthening people-to-people ties. 

Given where the relationship was two years ago, the handshake alone was significant. 

The hardest part:
Iran and the UAE, both BRICS members, are on opposite sides of a war. Foreign ministers failed to issue a joint statement in May over this divide. 

This time, the New Delhi Declaration was adopted by consensus. Both Tehran and Abu Dhabi signed. Getting that done was the diplomatic achievement of the weekend.

India's play:
Modi pushed proposals on cross-border digital payments, trade settlement in local currencies, and Global South participation in technology governance.

India framed its role as developmental, not confrontational. China and Russia pushed a "multipolar world order" narrative. India did not adopt that language.

Why it matters:
India hosted, mediated, and delivered a joint declaration that nobody expected to survive the Iran-UAE divide. The chairship now passes to China. 

What India built this weekend is a template for how it wants to lead, not by picking sides, but by keeping everyone at the table.
