Power and Policy
AAP defectors boost BJP numbers in Rajya Sabha
Seven of the ten Rajya Sabha MPs from the Aam Aadmi Party, including senior leader Raghav Chadha, have crossed over to the Bharatiya Janata Party. Six of the defectors are from Punjab, giving the BJP its highest-ever Rajya Sabha presence from the state.
The move raises the BJP’s strength in the Upper House to 113 seats, while the NDA crosses 140, tightening its grip on parliamentary arithmetic. For AAP, the defection cuts its Rajya Sabha strength from 10 MPs to just 3, months ahead of Punjab elections. The party has called the switch a betrayal and is seeking disqualification under anti-defection laws, allegations the BJP denies.
Why it matters:
The BJP gains legislative leverage in Parliament. But whether this numerical advantage converts into electoral traction in Punjab remains an open question.

India’s $250 billion e-commerce boom redraws retail playbook
India’s e-commerce market is projected to reach $250 billion, a pace of expansion driven in large part by younger consumers, according to a Deloitte-Google report. Gen Z shoppers now account for a growing share of digital retail activity, valuing speed, authenticity and personalized discovery, pushing platforms toward creator-led and live commerce models.
Platforms are shifting from catalogue-style browsing to content-led experiences where social video and influencer recommendations shape buying decisions. Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities are becoming significant revenue drivers as improved logistics and delivery networks deepen penetration beyond metros.

The Global Stir
India-New Zealand FTA offers full duty-free access to Indian exports
India has signed a Free Trade Agreement with New Zealand, granting 100 percent duty-free access to Indian exports across 8,000 plus products, including textiles, leather goods, and engineering items.
The agreement is expected to improve export competitiveness, boost bilateral trade, and attract investment, while India has kept sensitive sectors such as dairy and agriculture protected. Officials see the deal as part of a broader push to deepen trade ties without exposing domestic producers to sudden shocks.

Political arithmetic is easy to count. Public response is harder to predict. That gap is where the next few weeks will matter.
