🧾 GST Rules are getting a Cleanup

The latest GST Council meeting focused less on tax rates and more on making the system easier to deal with.

Here’s what stood out:

  • Fewer criminal cases: The Council proposed removing arrest powers under GST and raising the prosecution threshold from ₹1 crore to ₹5 crore.

  • Smaller penalties: The general penalty, where no specific penalty applies, could drop from ₹25,000 to ₹10,000.

  • Faster refunds: Refund claims could be acknowledged within 10 days instead of 15.

  • Less paperwork: Routine registration changes could become automatic, while smaller consumer-facing businesses may get the option to file GST returns annually.
