⛽ Petrol's grip on India is slipping

In July, for the first time, alternative-fuel cars came within a single percentage point of outselling petrol vehicles in India. That shift happened faster than almost anyone predicted.

Last week, Assam's floods dominated headlines again. No tree can stop a flood. But for centuries, one species has helped Assam's forests absorb, slow, and redistribute some of the heaviest rainfall in the country.

Meet the Hollong. Assam's state tree, one of India's tallest native rainforest species, growing up to 150 feet.

Its wide canopy intercepts rain before it hits the ground, its roots anchor soil against erosion, and its presence supports the broader health of the Brahmaputra valley's watersheds.

What happened? In July, alternative-fuel passenger vehicles - CNG, hybrid, and electric combined - hit 40.6% of total retail sales. Petrol cars? 41.7%. A year ago, that gap was over 13 percentage points. It is now barely one.

What's driving the shift?
Three things:
1. Rising concern over E20 ethanol-blended petrol and its impact on mileage and engines
2. High fuel prices after the Iran war
3. A wave of new CNG and EV models from every major carmaker.

CNG alone now accounts for nearly 25% of passenger vehicle sales. EVs touched a record 7.9%.

The bigger picture: Overall auto retail sales hit a record 25.9 lakh units in July, the strongest July ever. So, this is not petrol cars shrinking, it is the alternative segment growing faster than anyone expected.

Why it matters: FADA says alternative fuel could overtake petrol "anytime this year." And this was not forced by a government mandate. Indians are walking into showrooms and choosing CNG, hybrid, and electric on their own. That is a harder trend to reverse. Read More →
