In 1867, a British botanist collected a small purple-blue flower in Sikkim. Then it disappeared from India's records for over a century and a half. Last year, it turned up again.

There is a sound that means spring has arrived in Assam - high, rich, slightly wild. It comes from the Pepa, a traditional hornpipe made from a buffalo horn, a bamboo reed, and a row of finger holes. 

Legend says a herdsman built the first one after hearing wind whistle through a dead buffalo's horn on the Brahmaputra. Every year, its call opens Rongali Bihu.

But the Pepa is fading. As buffalo populations shrink, authentic horns are scarce - one can now cost up to ₹7,000. 

In June 2026, it received a GI tag, giving its makers legal protection and a better shot at a livelihood.

What is happening?
Under Operation Kayakalp, Uttar Pradesh has been transforming government schools that once had broken buildings and no toilets into clean, modern spaces - smart classrooms, computer labs, libraries, solar lighting, even biometric attendance.

Over 1.3 lakh schools have been upgraded across 19 infrastructure parameters, with 97% of basic facilities now in place. NITI Aayog has flagged it as a model worth copying nationally, and states like Delhi have since launched their own versions.
