What happened? 
Since yesterday, telecom operators are denying new SIM cards to anyone who already holds nine active connections across all networks. In Jammu & Kashmir, Assam, and the Northeast, the cap is six. Read More →

How does it work? 
The DoT has built a Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP) that maintains a database of every subscriber who has hit the limit, including photographs. When you apply for a new connection, the operator checks your details against this system. If you are at the cap, the application is automatically rejected.

Why now? 
Bulk SIM buying has been a key enabler of financial fraud, spam calls, and identity theft. India reported 24.4 billion spam calls in a single quarter earlier this year. This is the enforcement layer that was missing.

Why it matters: 
If you have a legitimate personal phone, a work SIM, and maybe a broadband connection, this will not affect you.

But if you know someone running a business with SIMs registered in employees' personal names, or if you have old unused numbers floating out there, now is a good time to check and surrender what you do not use.

After last week's 40% price spike and the government's decision to allow duty-free imports for the first time in a decade, the Indian Sugar Mills Association has stepped in with a clear message: there is no shortage.

ISMA says domestic supplies are adequate to meet demand through the festival season and expects prices to stabilise as the import window opens and stock limits on large buyers kick in. 

The panic, they say, was driven by speculative hoarding, not an actual supply gap. If they are right, your Diwali mithai bill may not be as bad as last week's headlines suggested.
